Is Acai Berry Safe

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Acai is not known to contain any potentially toxic compounds that would be a concern to consumers. It is consumed frequently in traditional Brazilian settings by people of all ages and is considered quite safe. However, the fruit is traditionally consumed when it is very fresh. Because of its rich fatty acid profile, acai fruit and acai dietary supplements are highly susceptible to rancidity. Potential microbial contamination of acai products is therefore the biggest safety concern. Acai products that have been exposed to heat or light, or which have an even slightly oxidized or rancid odor, should not be consumed.

Does Acai Interact with Prescription Drugs or Other Supplements?

No interactions between acai and any drug have been reported in the medical literature. Because acai is a rich source of antioxidants, it raises the question of whether it is safe to use during chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Some reports have concluded that cancer patients should avoid antioxidant supplements while receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment, because antioxidants could block the beneficial effects of these therapies. However, the majority of scientific evidence does not support this view. In the end, if you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment, it is best to check with your physician to see if acai berry products are right for you.

Even though acai berries contain no harmful results or acai side effects, it’s always a good idea to speak with your doctor or to seek proper medical advice if you are taking medications in which, could be influenced by the taking of any additional supplements or vitamins. It will also be good for your medical physician to be aware of any additional supplements you may be taking.
