Acai Antioxidants

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

It is known that health experts are strongly trying to encourage consumers to make eating fruit(like acai berries) and vegetables, a few times a day, a part of their diet to receive enough antioxidants(acai antioxidants). The biggest concern is many people do not understand or even know what antioxidants are and what their importance is to the human body. We are here to enlighten you by explaining exactly what antioxidants are, why you need them and most importantly a major fruit that is filled with them. So let’s begin by learning of what antioxidants (acai antioxidants) are.

What Are Antioxidants

We eat many common foods that contain antioxidants; foods that contain Vitamin C and E (acai antioxidants)are more common examples of the antioxidants we eat. Antioxidants are vitamins that have a mission to search and remove harmful particles and items that cause damage to our body cells which could lead to various diseases and illnesses if they were not removed. These free radicals are often used by our immune system to eliminate viruses and bacteria but can really cause negative effects if they weren’t controlled properly by antioxidants. Instead of letting these free radicals loose and roaming freely, the antioxidants keep these little guys in a controllable and confined state.

Why You Need Antioxidants

Aside from the above mentioned reasons of needing antioxidants, a study shows that dietary antioxidants are believed to be effective nutrients in the prevention of oxidative stress related diseases. Studies show that there is a strong positive result on the prevention of diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, inflammatory disease and age-related diseases. Antioxidants boost your immune system and help you feel healthier, more energetic and increase body functionality.

What is the Best Source of these Antioxidants

Although the acai berry fruit has only been available to countries outside of South America for the approximately the last 5 years, studies on this little berry have turned up quiet a stir. Research has revealed that the acai antioxidants levels in the acai fruit are through the roof and are the highest of all known fruits in the world. Acai fruit (acai extract, fresh fruit has a lower quantity) of 1027 micromoles versus cranberries at 95 micromoles and red grapes at 13 micromoles. So you see the significant difference in the acai berry over the other listed fruits. That is why the acai berry has been labeled as one of the worlds #1 Superfoods because of the high acai antioxidants.

Acai Amazon

What exactly does acai amazon mean? Some of you who have stumbled upon our website are either looking for the acai berry products on Amazon.com or are looking for more information of the acai fruit from the Amazon rainforest. Either way, you’re going to want to read this. I’m sure by now you’ve read many wonderful stories about the benefits of acai berries or how extraordinary this fruit is, if you haven’t this will fill you in on the details of what you have been missing.

For Those Looking to Buy Acai Amazon Website

Whether you’ve already become a regular acai berry consumer or are looking to buy your very first acai product, I wonder if you knew that acai berries are very unstable, meaning that they are a perishable fruit. It takes high quality care when processing the fruit to preserve it’s all natural nutritional benefits. What many stores or websites don’t tell you, is the large amount of acai berry nutrients you are missing out on by purchasing the acai berry juices, wines and smoothies. What happens after the acai berry has been harvested and processed, while in the development stages of making acai juice (for example), the acai berry extract is then mixed with an assortment of other juices that are more sweeter and two things result from the process of making acai juice. First, you lose many of the valuable nutrients and benefits of the acai berry because you are not consuming a high enough amount of the extract, it has been diluted by the various other ingredients, resulting in you needing to drink more servings of the juice to adequately accommodate the recommended amounts of acai amazon. Secondly, because of the lower quality or lower percentage of the actual acai berry extract you intake, you may still see and feel some of the benefits of the acai berry but you are missing out on possibly more positive effects of the acai berry. Not to mention the addition consumption of the sweeter juices mixed with the acai extract will take the healthy acai fruit and again dilute it’s healthiness with sweeter, more unhealthy juices. The most valuable way to consume acai berry, also one of the more affordable ways, is by using acai berry supplements.

The Hearts of Acai Palm Trees

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

The experience with acai of most non-Brazilians has been from eating hearts of palm, a delicacy from the trunk of the acai palm (typically the E. edulis species). Unfortunately, harvesting acai trees for hearts of palm means cutting them down, and trade in hearts of palm has led to widespread deforestation in Para.
The acai palm has been a very profitable source of hearts of palm, and most Euterpe harvesting takes place in the Orinoco Delta region of Venezuela. Habitat destruction and the overexploitation of E. edulis may be the two most important factors threatening biodiversity in Orinoco, Para, and other neighboring regions. In 2002, it was reported that poachers illegally chopped down five to ten thousand palm trees per week in the Itatiaia National Park (in the Mantiqueira mountain range near Rio de Janeiro), in order to sell the valuable hearts of palm.

A growing human population is straining biological resources, economic inequities are favoring overexploitation of local resources, and these social problems are contributing significantly to the extinction of the species Euterpe in several forest fragments, as well as the near-extinction and disappearance of many animal species. Some of these species have been lost as a direct result of hunting by poachers as they harvest E. edulis, while others disappeared as a consequence of decreased food availability or by harmful changes in the structure of the food chain. For these reasons, advocates of environmental preservation strongly discourage the consumption of hearts of palm by North Americans.

Fortunately, acai has multiple stems, and can provide sustained, renewable harvests when harvesting is managed with sustainable, ecologically responsible methods. Harvesting acai fruit does not necessitate cutting the trees at all; in fact, if acai fruit becomes popular worldwide, it may hold the key to saving the acai forests of Brazil. Some companies are trying to use a9ai cultivation and marketing as a vehicle to preserve Amazon rainforests. At the vanguard of this movement is Ryan Black, a surfer/entrepreneur, who developed a sustainable acai-harvesting forest project over the last six years in partnership with the Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund. Over twenty thousand people living in the Lower Tocantins river basin have been beneficiaries of this program. Fifteen years ago, the state government installed the Tucurui Hydroelectric Dam with a devastating effect on their fishing income. After years of cooperation between the Federal University of Para and Black’s acai company (called Sambazon), over fifteen hundred families and a local nongovernmental organization called FASE formed a thriving sustainable forest project built around the acai palm tree to extract palm hearts and fruits. While they were working with the hearts of palm, the acai fruit was falling to the ground or being sold haphazardly to middlemen. Each of the four communities had almost zero income until 2001 when “sustainable acai” found its first market. These communities now bring in more than half a million dollars per year through cooperative bank accounts set up with the assistance of Black and his colleagues.

If managed correctly and cooperatively, the boom in North American acai consumption could preserve acai’s future (rather than deplete it with overharvesting) and contribute to the well-being of the local—and too-often-impoverished—communities that cultivate this wonderful tree that can provide healthful benefits to so many people

Is Acai Berry Safe

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Acai is not known to contain any potentially toxic compounds that would be a concern to consumers. It is consumed frequently in traditional Brazilian settings by people of all ages and is considered quite safe. However, the fruit is traditionally consumed when it is very fresh. Because of its rich fatty acid profile, acai fruit and acai dietary supplements are highly susceptible to rancidity. Potential microbial contamination of acai products is therefore the biggest safety concern. Acai products that have been exposed to heat or light, or which have an even slightly oxidized or rancid odor, should not be consumed.

Does Acai Interact with Prescription Drugs or Other Supplements?

No interactions between acai and any drug have been reported in the medical literature. Because acai is a rich source of antioxidants, it raises the question of whether it is safe to use during chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Some reports have concluded that cancer patients should avoid antioxidant supplements while receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment, because antioxidants could block the beneficial effects of these therapies. However, the majority of scientific evidence does not support this view. In the end, if you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment, it is best to check with your physician to see if acai berry products are right for you.

Even though acai berries contain no harmful results or acai side effects, it’s always a good idea to speak with your doctor or to seek proper medical advice if you are taking medications in which, could be influenced by the taking of any additional supplements or vitamins. It will also be good for your medical physician to be aware of any additional supplements you may be taking.

How Do I Make Sure It’s High Quality Acai Berry

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Acai products have proliferated greatly in the last few years, and many are now commercially available in health food stores and over the Internet. However, few are of high quality. Do not buy acai based on the lowest price, or you will surely be ripped off. The best quality acai currently available is certified organic acai juice or frozen fruit pulp.

Powders and capsules are also available, but because of the immense difficulty in processing acai, few of these are worth buying. If you do buy acai capsules or powder, be sure to look for organic certification to be certain it was harvested in a way that preserves its nutrients and integrity. Also be sure the product has been freeze-dried or otherwise carefully preserved. If a manufacturer has done these things, they will proudly announce it on the label. Any manufacturer or marketer of acai products should also willingly certify that their product has been tested and analyzed according to industry standards and is free of microbial contaminants. Ideally, they can also provide lot-specific anthocyanin content and/or ORAC scores on their product’s label.

The color and the smell of acai products are important indicators of whether their origin, processing, and quality are acceptable. Real acai fruit is dark purple, almost black, so any acai product you purchase should also be dark purple. If it’s light purple or lavender, it’s not high-quality acai, or may not be acai at all. Also, acai should have little or no odor. If it smells like sunflower seeds or walnuts that have been sitting around too long, then it’s rancid. Acai is rich in fatty acids, but they are quite susceptible to spoilage and rancidity, so pay careful attention to how acai products smell.

Once opened, use your acai immediately and store the remainder in the refrigerator. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. If it starts to smell a bit off, it is almost certainly rancid (oxidized), which means it will have reduced — sometimes significantly — therapeutic value. Remember, acai is supposed to be an anti-oxidant.

Ways to Use Acai Berry

What Conditions Will Acai Treat?

It is important to state openly and clearly that, at the time of this writing, there have been no published human clinical trials of acai for the prevention or treatment of any health condition. However, there is enough preliminary evidence, particularly relating to the disease-preventing properties of anthocyanins, to be able to confidently recommend high-quality acai as a health-promoting supplement. Taken daily, high-quality acai should exert antioxidant effects in the body sufficient to help prevent heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, and cancer. The antioxidant activity of acai can also slow down or reverse some of the cellular changes associated with aging. Daily consumption of acai improves energy levels without caffeine and promotes overall good health in a safe and gentle way.

How Much Do I Need?

The amount of acai needed to achieve specific therapeutic effects has not been studied. The amount to take depends on whether you are drinking juice or taking a supplement.

Frozen pulp and juice: Acai is not usually sold as pure juice, but is instead mixed with other sweeter juices, so it is sometimes difficult to know exactly how much acai you’re actually getting. With frozen pulp, it is easier to estimate. Approximately 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of frozen certified organic acai pulp per day is a good place to start, although no standard has been established. In the Amazon, people consume up to a liter (34 ounces) of juice a day!

If you’re using acai powder, a typical amount would be about 1 ounce of powder mixed with 10 to 12 ounces of cold water (do not mix acai with hot water, as this can diminish its nutritional value). This can be done once or twice per day.

Freeze-dried acai in capsules or tablets is sometimes recommended at 1 to 2 grams per day, but this is a small quantity compared to consuming the powder or juice forms of acai.

Because acai is mainly a preventive general health tonic, and because specific health benefits in humans have not been demonstrated in controlled clinical trials, it is not possible to estimate what results you will obtain, or when. However, a high-quality acai product should produce noticeable improvements in your energy levels almost immediately.
